Prepare for Professional Cloud Architect by explaining how a design meets business and technical requirements. Review the current objectives and published case studies, then practise evaluating trade-offs with the recovery example below. Check the separate renewal routes if you already hold the credential.
Who is the exam for?
Professional Cloud Architect covers planning, designing, managing and securing Google Cloud solutions.
The current guide includes architecture across legacy, hybrid and multicloud environments and the Google Cloud Well-Architected Framework. It also includes AI topics alongside networking, storage, compute, security and operations.
There is no prerequisite certification. Google recommends three or more years of industry experience, including one or more years designing and managing Google Cloud solutions. The general certification FAQ requires candidates to be at least 18.

What are the six current exam areas?
Use the six areas below to organize your preparation. Their published weights are approximate.
The table summarizes the current guide. Use its detailed objective lists to check coverage, including Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform workflows, prebuilt AI solutions and AI security. Match study effort to your gaps as well as the weights.
| Exam section | Approximate weight | Study focus |
|---|---|---|
| Designing and planning a cloud solution architecture | ~25% | business and technical requirements, network/storage/compute choices, migration plans, future improvements |
| Managing and provisioning a cloud solution infrastructure | ~17.5% | network topologies, storage and compute configuration, ML/AI workflows and prebuilt AI APIs |
| Designing for security and compliance | ~17.5% | IAM, resource hierarchy, key management, security controls, regulation, industry certifications, audits |
| Analyzing and optimizing technical and business processes | ~15% | SDLC, CI/CD, disaster recovery, stakeholder management, change management, cost optimization |
| Managing implementation | ~12.5% | advising deployment teams, API management, programmatic access with gcloud, Terraform, and client libraries |
| Ensuring solution and operations excellence | ~12.5% | observability, release management, quality control, and production reliability practices such as chaos, penetration, and load testing |

How should you prepare for the case studies?
The standard exam includes two case studies, accounting for 20–30% of its questions. The current guide lists Altostrat Media, Cymbal Retail, EHR Healthcare and KnightMotives Automotive.
Read all four published cases during preparation. For each, separate business goals, the existing technical environment, requirements and constraints, then practise explaining how a proposed design addresses them.
Your preparation notes are a study aid. During the closed-book exam, use the supplied split-screen case-study reference; do not plan to bring your own notes. The official sample questions help you practise the format, but do not cover the full syllabus or predict your result.

Practice comparing recovery requirements
A recovery time objective (RTO) limits acceptable application downtime. A recovery point objective (RPO) limits the acceptable time window of potential data loss.
Google’s disaster recovery guide distinguishes these objectives from each other. Recovery design also involves cost and other requirements. This exercise supplies every selection criterion and fictional measured capabilities; it does not give real product prices or guarantees.
Practice exercise
A fictional application requires recovery within four hours, a potential data-loss window of at most one hour, and a monthly recovery-system cost no higher than USD300. Assume these are the only selection criteria and every option has adequate capacity and security. Testing produced these recovery bounds: A — three hours downtime, two hours potential data loss, USD200/month; B — four hours downtime, 30 minutes potential data loss, USD280/month; C — one hour downtime, 15 minutes potential data loss, USD400/month. Which option meets all three requirements?
Show answer
Only option B meets all three requirements.
A exceeds the one-hour data-loss limit. C exceeds the USD300 budget. B meets the four-hour recovery limit exactly, stays below the data-loss limit, and costs less than the budget. The answer follows from this example’s explicit constraints. It does not establish a universal rule to choose the cheapest architecture or to decide every reliability problem using only RTO and RPO.

Build a practical preparation checklist
Pair the official learning path and objectives with tasks that make your design reasoning visible.
- Write a short requirements map for each published case and distinguish requirements from assumptions you added yourself.
- For each exam area, explain one relevant decision, its trade-offs and the evidence needed to check it. Consult current product documentation for service behavior.
- Practise applicable implementation and operations objectives in an authorized learning environment. Confirm access and costs before creating resources.
- Solve the recovery exercise before reading its answer. For a different scenario, re-evaluate its actual criteria instead of transferring this answer mechanically.
- Review sample-answer explanations, revisit weak objectives, and confirm the current exam guide and appointment requirements before booking.

What should you expect on exam day?
The standard Professional Cloud Architect exam lasts two hours and has 50–60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. Registration costs USD200, plus applicable tax. The exam is offered in English and Japanese.
Choose a testing center or Pearson OnVUE remote proctoring. Remote exams are closed book and normally permit no breaks. Check the current ID, workspace, system and appointment instructions; arrange any needed accommodation before scheduling.
Your initial pass/fail result is provisional. Google says to allow 7–10 days for official confirmation. It does not report a numerical score; unsuccessful standard-exam candidates receive section-level feedback to help guide further study.
Professional candidates may make up to four attempts within two years. After a first failure, wait at least 14 days; after a second, 60 days; after a third, 365 days. Attempts count across languages and delivery methods, and each registration is paid.

Which renewal route applies to you?
The certification is initially valid for two years. Eligible holders can renew by the standard exam, a shorter renewal exam, or designated Google Skills learning.
The shorter exam has its own guide. It lasts one hour, has 25 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions, costs USD100 plus applicable tax, and is offered in English and Japanese. It uses one generative-AI case study accounting for 90–100% of its questions; its guide lists Altostrat Media and Cymbal Retail.
For designated learning renewal, complete eligible activities during the final year before your inactive date, use matching CM Connect and Google Skills emails and authorize data sharing. Earlier completions outside that window do not count. Professional Cloud Architect holders may switch between the shorter and standard exam renewal paths.
Google permits renewal within 30 days after the inactive date, subject to the available options. More than 30 days later, recertification requires the standard exam at full list price. Check your profile dates and the guide for the route you choose.
| Route | Window opens | Extension |
|---|---|---|
| Designated Google Skills learning | One year before inactive date | Adds one year to inactive date |
| Shorter or standard renewal exam | 60 days before inactive date | Adds two years to inactive date |
