Prepare for Associate Google Workspace Administrator by matching the current objectives to administration tasks you can explain and, where you have authorized access, practise. Use the six-area map below, work the complete configuration-group example, and verify service-specific behavior in Google documentation.

Who is this Associate certification for?

The exam covers administration of a Google Workspace environment, including users, core services, governance, security, endpoints and troubleshooting.

There are no formal prerequisites, and the general certification program requires candidates to be at least 18. Google recommends about six months of Super Admin experience in a real or test environment; that is preparation guidance rather than an entry condition.

This guide follows the current Associate exam. Check the credential name and outline when using material for the retired Professional Google Workspace Administrator exam.

What are the six exam areas?

Use the current official exam guide to cover all six areas, including the smaller endpoint and troubleshooting sections.

These are the issuer’s approximate weights. They total 101% because the published figures are rounded; they have been preserved rather than adjusted into invented weights. Use the detailed outline for complete coverage and treat these ranges as emphasis, not fixed question counts.

2. Core Workspace services~23%Gmail, Drive and Docs, Calendar, Meet, Chat and Gemini; service settings, sharing, routing, integrations and AppSheet or scripting features listed in the outline.

Practice reasoning about configuration groups

For supported settings, configuration groups can provide exceptions to organizational-unit settings. Check the specific setting and documented exceptions.

An organizational unit (OU) groups users for policy settings in a hierarchy. Google’s configuration-group guidance says users can belong to multiple configuration groups and receive the relevant setting from the highest-priority group they belong to.

The same guidance gives an exception: a two-step verification (2SV) policy enforced on a child OU takes precedence over a configuration-group setting. Do not turn the general override rule into a promise that every setting follows it.

The configuration-group task is an original practice scenario built on documented Workspace behavior; all assumptions needed for a unique answer are stated in the prompt.

Dana stays in OU Staff, where a supported video-approval setting is restrictive. Group Reviewers permits approval and has the highest priority among Dana’s groups for that setting. Dana is added to Reviewers. Assume Reviewers changes only this one setting; no other membership, OU or policy changes; service access and licensing are satisfied; and changes have propagated. (1) Which approval value applies? (2) Does this change every other OU-derived setting? (3) In a separate case, would a configuration-group exemption override 2SV enforced on a child OU?

Try the task yourself before reading the answer and explanation.

(1) The permitting value from Reviewers applies. (2) No: under the stated premises, only the specified approval setting changes. (3) No. Google documents that the child-OU 2SV policy takes precedence.

The first result follows from the supported group setting and its priority. The second follows from the explicit premise that no other settings or memberships changed; it is not a universal guarantee about every group change. The third tests a documented exception. This is a paper scenario, not permission to change a production domain.

Build a task-based preparation checklist

Use the official learning path to address gaps, then check the effect of each task against current documentation.

Google’s sample questions help with format and example content; they do not cover the full topic range or predict a passing score. Practical study should extend beyond that question set.

  • Mark detailed objectives by what you can explain, have administered, or still need to learn. Keep a record of the evidence behind an answer.
  • In an authorized test environment, predict the effect of one supported setting before changing it, then compare the result with the relevant documentation.
  • For user lifecycle and data governance, review the listed suspension, deletion, transfer, retention and recovery tasks. Check their documented consequences instead of memorizing a universal offboarding order.
  • For security and endpoints, connect a stated requirement with the listed control, required access and supported environment. Record features you cannot yet practise.
  • For troubleshooting, use the reported symptom and available evidence to choose appropriate logs and tools. Do not assume that every problem follows the same investigation sequence.
  • Review the current exam outline and booking instructions before scheduling, including any accommodation needs.

What should you expect on exam day?

Associate Google Workspace Administrator is a proctored exam lasting 2 hours, with 50–60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. Registration is USD125, plus applicable tax.

You can use Pearson OnVUE remote proctoring or a testing center. Remote sessions are closed book and normally allow no breaks. Follow the current identification, workspace, check-in and accommodation instructions for your appointment.

You receive a provisional pass/fail result after submitting. Google says to allow 7–10 days for official confirmation. It does not provide a numerical score; unsuccessful standard-exam candidates can use section-level feedback to guide further preparation.

The Associate retake policy permits up to four attempts within two years. Wait at least 14 days after the first failure, 60 after the second and 365 after the third. Attempts count across languages and delivery methods, and each registration is paid.

How long is the certification valid?

The certification is valid for three years. Exam renewal opens 180 days before your inactive date and adds three years to that date.

The current renewal table does not offer this credential the designated Google Skills continuing-education or shorter-exam options available for selected other certifications. Check CM Connect and the credential page for the renewal option that applies to your status.

Google allows renewal within its 30-day period after the inactive date, subject to the applicable exam options. More than 30 days after that date, recertification requires the standard exam at full list price. Keep your profile email and dates current rather than relying only on reminder messages.
