Prepare for Associate Data Practitioner by covering the complete data workflow: ingestion, analysis, orchestration and management. Use the current official guide to identify gaps, practise the listed tasks where you have suitable access, and explain what a query returns before relying on its result.

Who is Associate Data Practitioner for?

The certification covers using Google Cloud data services to ingest, transform, manage, analyze and present data, including machine-learning tasks in the outline.

There are no formal prerequisites, and candidates must be at least 18 under Google’s general policy. Google recommends six or more months of experience working with data on Google Cloud; that is preparation guidance, not a mandatory credential or waiting period.

The currently linked English exam guide is marked v1.0. The credential page announces a forthcoming branding update, so check the actual linked guide near your appointment rather than assuming a future change has already taken effect.

What are the four tested areas?

The linked v1.0 outline gives approximately 30% to preparation/ingestion, 27% to analysis/presentation, 18% to orchestration and 25% to management.

Use this condensed map with the full official objective list. The approximate weights describe emphasis, not a fixed question count or a rule to study only the largest areas.

Exam section (v1.0 guide)WeightFocus your review on
1. Data Preparation and Ingestion~30%ETL, ELT, and ETLT trade-offs; transfer tools such as Storage Transfer Service and Transfer Appliance; data formats and quality checks; extraction and load tools; storage choice and location type
2. Data Analysis and Presentation~27%BigQuery SQL queries; Jupyter notebooks in Colab Enterprise; Looker versus Looker Studio; simple LookML changes; defining, training, and evaluating models with BigQuery ML and AutoML; remote use of pretrained LLMs in BigQuery; Model Registry
3. Data Pipeline Orchestration~18%Choosing transformation tools (Dataproc, Dataflow, Cloud Data Fusion, Cloud Composer, Dataform); scheduled queries; Dataflow job monitoring; Cloud Logging and Monitoring; orchestration choice; event-driven ingestion from Pub/Sub to BigQuery; Eventarc triggers
4. Data Management~25%IAM least privilege with basic versus predefined roles; Cloud Storage access control; Analytics Hub sharing; storage classes and lifecycle deletion rules; archiving; backup, replication, and location redundancy for Cloud Storage and Cloud SQL; CMEK, CSEK, and GMEK; Cloud KMS; encryption in transit versus at rest

Practice counting rows and missing values in BigQuery

COUNT(*) counts rows. COUNT(expression) excludes NULL values, and COUNT(DISTINCT expression) counts distinct non-NULL values.

The complete query below supplies five values: East, East, NULL, West and NULL. The NULL entries are missing values, not the text "NULL". Predict the three results before reading the answer.

SELECT
  COUNT(*) AS rows_total,
  COUNT(category) AS populated,
  COUNT(DISTINCT category) AS unique_categories
FROM UNNEST(['East', 'East', NULL, 'West', NULL]) AS category;

Worked example

For the five supplied values East, East, NULL, West and NULL in the query, what do rows_total, populated and unique_categories return? Do the results alone justify deleting any rows?

Show answer

rows_total = 5, populated = 3, unique_categories = 2. These counts alone do not justify deleting rows.

All five rows contribute to COUNT(*). Only East, East and West contribute to COUNT(category). The distinct non-NULL values are East and West, so COUNT(DISTINCT category) returns 2. The result identifies missing category values in this fixture; their cause, acceptability and treatment require additional context.

Build a preparation checklist beyond SQL

Connect each objective to a task and explain how you would check its result. SQL familiarity covers only part of this exam.

Use the official learning path, hands-on resources available to you, and sample questions. Google’s samples help with format and example content; they do not cover the full topic range or predict a passing score.

  • Mark objectives you have practised, can explain, or still need to learn. Include ingestion, orchestration, machine learning, visualization and management as well as SQL.
  • For ingestion and storage, write down the data format, arrival pattern, location, access and protection requirements before comparing documented options.
  • For analysis, predict a query result from a small complete dataset and check it. Practise the listed visualization and model tasks separately rather than treating one query as full domain coverage.
  • For pipelines, identify dependencies, scheduling or event requirements and the evidence you would monitor. Avoid selecting a service from a cue word alone.
  • For management, review the listed access, sharing, lifecycle, backup and encryption objectives against current documentation. Use authorized learning resources and check costs before creating them.
  • After samples or practice tasks, record the gaps and return to the corresponding objective. Confirm current product names and appointment requirements before booking.

What should you expect on exam day?

Associate Data Practitioner is a proctored exam lasting 2 hours, with 50–60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. Registration is USD125, plus applicable tax.

You can use Pearson OnVUE remote proctoring or a testing center. Remote sessions are closed book and normally allow no breaks. Follow the current identification, workspace, check-in and accommodation instructions for your appointment.

You receive a provisional pass/fail result after submitting. Google says to allow 7–10 days for official confirmation. It does not provide a numerical score; unsuccessful standard-exam candidates can use section-level feedback to guide further preparation.

The Associate retake policy permits up to four attempts within two years. Wait at least 14 days after the first failure, 60 after the second and 365 after the third. Attempts count across languages and delivery methods, and each registration is paid.

How long is the certification valid?

The certification is valid for three years. Exam renewal opens 180 days before your inactive date and adds three years to that date.

The current renewal table does not offer this credential the designated Google Skills continuing-education or shorter-exam options available for selected other certifications. Check CM Connect and the credential page for the renewal option that applies to your status.

Google allows renewal within its 30-day period after the inactive date, subject to the applicable exam options. More than 30 days after that date, recertification requires the standard exam at full list price. Keep your profile email and dates current rather than relying only on reminder messages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers to help you apply the guidance for Google Cloud Associate Data Practitioner.

Does SQL experience replace the recommended data-platform practice?
It can help with the analysis objectives, but the outline also covers ingestion, pipeline orchestration, visualization, machine learning and data management. Compare your experience with those specific tasks; there is no requirement to obtain another certification first.
