Prepare for Cloud Digital Leader by explaining cloud concepts in business terms and comparing options against stated needs. Start with the exam guide introduced on August 12, 2026, cover all six areas, and use the official sample questions to learn the format and identify gaps.

Who is Cloud Digital Leader for?

This foundational certification assesses your ability to describe Google Cloud’s core offerings and connect them to business use cases.

There are no formal prerequisites. Google recommends experience collaborating with technical professionals, and its certification program requires candidates to be at least 18. Technical experience can help, but it is different from a prerequisite credential.

The standard certification is valid for three years. Use the current exam guide to check older learning material; a familiar product name alone does not establish that a resource covers the updated exam.

What should you study for the current exam?

The current guide has six areas: approximately 18% each for the first five and 10% for cloud operations.

Use this condensed map with the full official outline. The practice tasks are suggestions for applying the listed topics, not a claim that one task covers every objective or predicts an exam question.

AreaApproximate weightTopics and suggested practice
Digital transformation18%Cloud benefits and terminology, agentic AI, open standards, cloud architectures and IaaS/PaaS/SaaS. Explain a business requirement and compare the control and management responsibilities of possible service models.
Data transformation18%Data value, databases, warehouses, lakes, analytics and streaming, storage classes and relevant Google Cloud data offerings. Match a stated data use case to documented product capabilities and explain the choice.
Artificial intelligence18%AI, machine learning and generative AI; data quality; pre-trained APIs, foundation models and custom solutions. Compare a prebuilt and custom approach against the team’s expertise, time and differentiation goals.
Infrastructure and application modernization18%Migration approaches, virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes, serverless, autoscaling and APIs; Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run and Apigee. Explain the business need behind a proposed modernization approach.
Trust and security18%Threats, encryption, authentication, authorization, auditing, least privilege, zero trust and Google Cloud security offerings. Identify the responsibilities that remain with a customer in a documented example.
Cloud operations10%Cost control and total cost of ownership, resource hierarchy, reliability and resilience, and service-level indicators, objectives and agreements. Explain how a proposed operational measure relates to the stated business goal.

Practice matching a service model to a business need

Compare what each team needs to control with the responsibilities of the proposed service.

Google’s shared-responsibility guidance identifies Compute Engine as infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and Google Workspace as software as a service (SaaS). For IaaS, Google focuses on underlying infrastructure and physical security while the customer retains much of the security work. With SaaS, Google takes on more responsibilities, but customers retain access-control and data responsibilities.

The following original example deliberately limits the choice to those two offerings. Check the actual service documentation when applying this reasoning to another product or configuration.

Worked example written for this guide, grounded in Google's shared-responsibility documentation

Choose between Compute Engine, an IaaS offering for running applications on virtual machines with chosen configurations, and Google Workspace, a SaaS offering of finished collaboration applications. Team A must run its own application on a particular virtual-machine configuration that it manages. Team B needs finished email and document-collaboration applications and has no requirement to build them. Which offering matches each team, what is its service model, and does Team B lose all responsibility for access and stored data?

Try the matching exercise before reading the answer

Team A matches Compute Engine (IaaS). Team B matches Google Workspace (SaaS). Team B still has responsibility for its access controls and the data it chooses to store in the application.

A needs control over the specified application and virtual-machine configuration; B needs a finished application. Those stated needs distinguish the two options. Moving to SaaS changes the responsibility split, but does not remove the customer duties described in Google’s guidance. This example does not establish that every service in the same model has identical controls.

Use a focused preparation checklist

Use the official outline for coverage and the learning path to address your gaps. Sample questions help with format, not with predicting a passing score.

Google explicitly says its samples do not represent the full topic range or difficulty of the exam. After each sample, explain your answer and check the relevant objective rather than memorizing the choice or treating the sample set as a complete syllabus.

  • Mark each detailed objective as familiar, uncertain or new. Keep all six areas in your plan.
  • For an unfamiliar term, write a plain-language definition and one supported business example.
  • For a product comparison, name the requirement that favors one option and verify the claimed capability in current Google documentation.
  • Work the service-model exercise before revealing the answer. Identify the exact premise that supports each choice.
  • Review sample-question explanations and return to the learning path for gaps. If you have a failed-attempt score report, use its section feedback alongside the full outline.
  • Confirm the appointment, delivery requirements and regional taxes before registering.

What should you expect on exam day?

The standard exam is 90 minutes with 50–60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. Registration is USD99, plus tax where applicable.

Google offers remote proctoring through Pearson OnVUE and testing-center delivery. Remote exams are closed book and do not permit breaks; follow the current identification, workspace and check-in requirements for your appointment.

You receive a provisional pass/fail result, followed by official confirmation after Google’s checks. Google does not provide a numerical score; unsuccessful standard-exam candidates can use section-level feedback in the Candidate Portal. The foundational retake policy permits up to ten attempts within one year, with at least 14 days between failed attempts and payment for each registration.

How can you renew the certification?

Eligible holders can use an exam or designated Google Skills learning. These routes have different windows and extensions.

For continuing education, complete the designated learning during the final year before your inactive date. Earlier completions do not count toward that window. Use a matching CM Connect email and authorize the required data sharing so the coursework can be recognized.

For Cloud Digital Leader, once you make the first renewal attempt using the shorter exam or standard exam, you cannot switch between those two exam paths. Check the options shown for your credential before booking.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers to help you apply the guidance for Google Cloud Digital Leader.

What if my certification has already become inactive?
Google’s renewal policy allows renewal within its 30-day grace period, subject to the exam-specific options for your status. More than 30 days after the inactive date, you must take the standard exam at full list price to recertify. Check CM Connect and the current policy promptly rather than assuming that a learning route remains available after expiry.
Do I need to pass every exam section separately?
Google says the overall result is based on performance across the exam, rather than a separate pass requirement for each section. It does not publish a numerical passing score. Use section feedback to guide further study without treating it as an independent credential.
