Prepare for SC-300 across its four identity and access areas: user identities, authentication and access, workload identities, and governance. Use the English objectives dated April 27, 2026 as a checklist, practise listed tasks in an authorized environment, and explain the PIM timeline below. The official practice assessment and exam sandbox can help you identify gaps and learn the interface.

Who is SC-300 for?

SC-300 is the required exam for Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate. It focuses on administering identity and access with Microsoft Entra.

In this role, you design, implement, and operate an organization's identity and access management using Microsoft Entra. You manage identity lifecycles for users, devices, Azure resources, and applications, and you are responsible for applying Zero Trust principles to identity and access solutions. Troubleshooting, monitoring, and reporting on identity and access are also part of the job, and you collaborate with other roles on strategic identity projects.

Microsoft expects familiarity with Azure, Microsoft 365 services and workloads, Active Directory Domain Services, PowerShell, and Kusto Query Language (KQL). The current pages do not list a prerequisite exam. Treat the audience profile as a way to identify preparation gaps.

What should you study for SC-300?

The April 27, 2026 English outline has four skill areas. The table below summarizes their scope and suggests a task to practise for each.

Use the official detailed objectives for full coverage. The current document gives conflicting authentication-and-access weight ranges: 25–30% in its overview and 20–25% in the detailed heading. This guide therefore does not present a resolved weight table or infer how many questions you will receive.

Microsoft updates the English exam first. Localized versions normally follow about eight weeks later, but the schedule can vary. Check the version for your appointment and compare older resources with current objectives before deciding what to retain.

Practice: when is a PIM role active?

An eligible assignment requires activation before you can use that assignment’s privileges. Activation may require MFA, approval or other actions set by the role’s policy.

Privileged Identity Management (PIM) provides time-based and approval-based role activation. Its documentation distinguishes eligibility from an active assignment and says an activated role is available for a configured period. A permanent eligible assignment means continuing eligibility to activate; it does not itself create a permanent active assignment.

This original exercise uses invented times and an explicit policy. Answer the assignment-state question from the information given; it does not test how quickly every application, token or existing session reflects an access change.

Practice exercise

Mira has one eligible assignment to a role managed by PIM and no other assignment to that role. Assume her eligibility continues throughout this exercise. Its policy requires an MFA check and approval, with a maximum activation duration of two hours. She requests activation at 09:00 and completes MFA; approval is pending at 09:05. At 09:15 approval is granted and activation completes with a recorded expiry of 11:15. What is the assignment state at 09:05, 10:00 and 11:20? What should she request at 11:20 if she still needs to use the role?

Show answer

At 09:05, eligible but not activated. At 10:00, activated within the recorded window. At 11:20, the activation has expired while eligibility continues; she needs to request a new activation and meet the configured requirements.

MFA alone does not complete this scenario’s activation while required approval is pending. The supplied record establishes activation at 09:15 and expiry at 11:15. The maximum duration is a policy limit, not evidence that a pending request is already active. The answer describes this assignment, without claiming instant termination of every existing session or prescribing an MFA prompt for every possible real tenant policy.

How can you turn reading into practical preparation?

Work through the objectives with a repeatable task, an expected result, and an explanation of what you observed.

Microsoft recommends training and hands-on experience. Use the current learning paths and product documentation. Arrange an authorized practice environment and check licenses, permissions and resource requirements first; access to a free developer or trial tenant is not guaranteed.

Start with a manageable listed task, such as a user or group operation, app registration, access review, or PIM activation. Follow its official lab instructions and explain the purpose of each setting. A paper exercise can clarify concepts while you arrange access, but does not establish that you can perform every administration task.

  • Mark every detailed objective as understood, practised, or needing work.
  • Use the four-area map to find gaps instead of relying on a course completion percentage.
  • Work the PIM timeline and explain why approval pending, activation, and expiry are different states.
  • Review PowerShell and the KQL monitoring tasks named in the profile and objectives; practise explaining relevant commands and query outputs.
  • Use the free practice assessment’s explanations and links to investigate mistakes. Microsoft says its examples are not real exam questions and do not reproduce exam length or complexity.
  • Try the exam sandbox to learn the question interface, then check appointment details.

What should you expect during the exam?

The current SC-300 page lists 100 minutes. A score of 700 on Microsoft’s scaled 1–1,000 scale passes; it is not a raw 70% threshold.

The exam is proctored and may contain interactive components. Microsoft’s general policy distinguishes exam time from seat time and allows different durations for role-based exams that may include labs. It does not publish a fixed lab list. Confirm the time on your registration and read the overview when the exam begins.

Book through the official credential page for current pricing, languages and accommodations. Microsoft recommends a personal account so your certification records do not depend on continued access to a school or employer account.

  • Question counts vary. Plan pacing from the instructions for your appointment rather than treating a practice test’s count as fixed.
  • Restricted Microsoft Learn access covers learn.microsoft.com, excluding Q&A, practice assessments and your profile. Other web domains are blocked, and no extra time is provided for browsing.
  • Five minutes for breaks are already included in exam time. The clock keeps running; starting a break prevents returning to previously viewed questions, including unanswered or flagged ones.

How do renewal and retakes work?

The credential is initially valid for one year. Renew before expiry through a separate free, open-book, unproctored assessment on Microsoft Learn.

The renewal window opens six months before your expiration date. Passing extends the credential one year from that expiration date. Check your profile’s actual date; once expired, the certification must be re-earned through the required exam requirements.

A failed SC-300 exam has a standard 24-hour wait after the first attempt, then 14 days between subsequent attempts, with a maximum of five attempts in a 12-month period from the first attempt. Renewal attempts follow a separate policy: after the second unsuccessful try, wait at least 24 hours between further attempts and pass before expiry.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers to help you apply the guidance for Microsoft Certified Identity and Access Administrator Associate (SC-300).

Should I take SC-900 first if I have little Entra experience?
SC-900 is not listed as a prerequisite. Compare your background with SC-300’s audience profile and tasks. If concepts are unfamiliar, study them before attempting the associated administration work; a Fundamentals pass by itself does not demonstrate those practical skills.
Does a strong practice-assessment score mean I am ready?
It is one piece of feedback, not a pass guarantee. Check whether you can explain the answers and carry out the relevant objectives beyond that question set. Microsoft says practice assessments do not replace training or product experience.
