DP-203 and Azure Data Engineer Associate retired on March 31, 2025. You can no longer earn or renew that credential. If you want a current Fabric data engineering credential, compare DP-700’s own skills and requirements with your goals. Keep useful older concepts where they match, and check the actual expiry of any credential you already hold.
What changed after DP-203 retired?
Microsoft retired Exam DP-203 and the Azure Data Engineer Associate certification, including the renewal assessment, on March 31, 2025 at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time. The exam cannot be booked and the credential cannot be earned or renewed.
The credential page states that Azure Data Engineer Associate and its renewal assessment are retired. The archived DP-203 study guide gives the exam retirement as March 31, 2025, at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time.
This guide helps you interpret older material and compare the current Fabric Data Engineer Associate path. An exam retirement does not, by itself, establish the retirement or availability of every service in its syllabus. Check current service documentation before relying on old instructions.

What should existing credential holders check?
Read the actual expiry date on your Microsoft Learn transcript. Retirement did not cancel an unexpired credential early, but the renewal assessment is no longer available.
Microsoft’s current policy gives role-based certifications one year of validity after requirements are completed. A record may also reflect renewal completed before retirement. Do not calculate expiry from the original award date alone.
A retired credential remains in the active section until its own expiry. The non-expiring Fundamentals policy does not apply to Azure Data Engineer Associate. A current credential has its own requirements; do not assume automatic conversion from DP-203.

Which older topics are useful to compare?
The archived English skills list dated October 24, 2024 covered storage, data processing, and security, monitoring, and optimization.
Its historical ranges were storage 15–20%, data processing 40–45%, and security, monitoring, and optimization 30–35%. These describe retired DP-203, not current DP-700.
The old outline included partitioning, incremental loading, transformations, handling missing or repeated data, batch and streaming work, access controls, and pipeline monitoring. Compare those concepts with the current Fabric tasks and tools; do not assume that an old service-specific procedure applies unchanged.
The historical audience profile named SQL, Python, and Scala. The current Fabric profile explicitly names SQL, PySpark, and Kusto Query Language (KQL). Use the current profile to assess your preparation.

What to study for the current DP-700 path
Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate is earned through DP-700. Use its English skills list dated July 21, 2026 to plan Fabric preparation.
The current role covers loading patterns, data architecture and orchestration, ingestion and transformation, and securing, managing, monitoring, and optimizing an analytics solution. It is a separate credential with Fabric-specific tasks.
Each of the three areas has an official 30–35% range. These are not fixed question counts or a required division of study hours. Check the full objectives and your own gaps.
The credential page links official learning material, a practice assessment, and the exam sandbox. Use practice explanations to identify topics to revisit; a score or this guide’s single exercise is not a guarantee of readiness.
| Current DP-700 area | Weight range | Topics and suggested practice |
|---|---|---|
| Implement and manage an analytics solution | 30–35% | Fabric workspace settings, lifecycle and version control, deployment, security and governance, OneLake, and orchestration. Explain how a fictional pipeline is managed and how its access requirements would be checked. |
| Ingest and transform data | 30–35% | Loading patterns, Dataflows Gen2, pipelines and notebooks, shortcuts and mirroring, batch transformations, Eventstreams, and KQL. Trace a small dataset through a transformation and explain missing or repeated values. |
| Monitor and optimize an analytics solution | 30–35% | Monitoring, troubleshooting errors, and performance work across Fabric items. Use the official learning exercises to explain an observed problem and which evidence you would inspect next. |

Practice: count repeated event IDs before deciding what they mean
Grouping and counting can reveal repeated IDs. The counts alone do not show whether records should be deleted.
The historical objectives included handling duplicates during cleansing, and current data engineering still requires interpreting transformation results. This original SQL example practices grouping and counting using the supplied data; it is not an actual exam question.
Events contains exactly five rows with EventId values A, A, B, C, C. There are no joins or filters. The query has no ORDER BY clause, so the order of its output rows is not guaranteed.
SELECT EventId, COUNT(*) AS row_count
FROM Events
GROUP BY EventId;Try it yourself
The Events table has five rows with EventId values A, A, B, C, C. You run the query in the code block. What output does it produce, which IDs repeat, how many extra occurrences exist beyond one row per ID, and does the repetition by itself mean the duplicate rows must be deleted?
Show answer
The query returns one row per EventId group: A with row_count 2, B with row_count 1, and C with row_count 2, in no guaranteed order. A and C repeat. Beyond one row per ID there are two extra occurrences: one surplus A and one surplus C. The repetition alone does not mean the rows must be deleted.
GROUP BY produces one result row for each EventId group. COUNT(*) counts all rows within that group, giving A:2, B:1, and C:2. Beyond one occurrence per ID, the extra count is (2−1)+(1−1)+(2−1)=2. The query does not define what EventId is intended to identify or whether repeated IDs are legitimate. That business meaning must be established before deciding on any data change; no deletion follows from these counts alone.

How to reuse DP-203 study material
You do not need to finish old DP-203 material before starting DP-700, and the retired exam is not a stated prerequisite. Use the current DP-700 objectives to choose your learning tasks, and keep old concepts only where they match.
Start with the current DP-700 task list and mark what you can explain or perform. Keep older conceptual material where it helps with those tasks, then use current Fabric documentation for the implementation.
For example, understanding why an incremental load needs a reliable boundary can support further learning. It does not replace learning the current Fabric pipeline or notebook task. Similarly, the SQL grouping example teaches one distinction, not every data-cleansing decision.
Review SQL, PySpark, and KQL according to the current profile. Avoid a fixed overlap estimate between exams or a rule that all old material must be completed first.
