Prepare for Professional Data Engineer by explaining how data moves from its source to a reliable, usable result. Use the five-area map, practise the tasks you have not handled at work, and test your aggregate reasoning with the BigQuery example below.
Who is the exam for?
Professional Data Engineer covers collecting, transforming, storing and delivering data, and maintaining the systems that support it.
There is no prerequisite certification. Google recommends three or more years of industry experience, including at least one year designing and managing Google Cloud solutions. The general FAQ requires candidates to be at least 18.
Google has announced upcoming branding changes. Use the current standard guide linked from the credential page to check the product names and objectives for your appointment. The shorter renewal exam uses a separate guide.

What are the five current exam areas?
The current standard guide weights design at approximately 22%, ingestion and processing at 25%, storage at 20%, analysis at 15%, and maintaining and automating workloads at 18%.
Use the table to organize preparation and the official guide for every sub-objective. Approximate weights describe emphasis; choose practice tasks according to your gaps.
| Exam guide section | Approximate weight | Study focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Designing data processing systems | ~22% | Security, compliance, reliability, data fidelity, flexibility, portability and migrations |
| 2. Ingesting and processing the data | ~25% | Sources and sinks, transformations, orchestration, batch and streaming pipelines, windowing and late-arriving data |
| 3. Storing the data | ~20% | Access patterns, storage selection, warehouses, data lakes and platforms including Dataplex |
| 4. Preparing and using data for analysis | ~15% | Data for visualization and AI/ML, embeddings, retrieval-augmented generation and BigQuery sharing |
| 5. Maintaining and automating data workloads | ~18% | Costs, repeatable orchestration, capacity, BigQuery Editions and reservations, monitoring and fault tolerance |

Practice averages with missing values
BigQuery AVG calculates the average of non-NULL values in the group.
For this fictional data, each row is one equally weighted daily observation in the same currency unit. NULL means the daily total was not recorded. The displayed query tests how a missing value affects the denominator.
SELECT AVG(x) AS mean_value
FROM UNNEST([12, 18, CAST(NULL AS INT64), 30]) AS x;Practice exercise
Part A: what does the displayed query return for 12, 18, NULL and 30? Part B is a separate data set: batch A has two recorded, finite observations totaling 300; batch B has eight recorded, finite observations totaling 400. No values are missing and all ten observations have equal weight. What is their combined mean, and why is averaging the two batch means wrong?
Show answer
Part A returns 20: (12 + 18 + 30) / 3. Part B returns 70: (300 + 400) / (2 + 8). The unweighted average of batch means is 100, which is incorrect for these ten equally weighted observations.
AVG excludes the NULL argument, so Part A uses three recorded values. Treating the unrecorded day as zero would impose a different data rule. In Part B, the batch means are 150 and 50, but their counts differ. Weighting them by two and eight gives 70; weighting the batches equally gives 100. Check the meaning of missing data and the intended unit of weighting before selecting a formula.

Build a practical preparation checklist
Combine the official Data Engineer learning path, current objectives, sample questions and service documentation.
For a small authorized learning task, trace the source, transformations, destination, validation checks and monitoring evidence. Explain your choices using the task’s requirements. Check access and costs before creating resources.
Samples introduce the format and example content; they do not cover the full syllabus or predict your result. Use their explanations to identify what to revisit.
- Design: turn a data requirement into explicit security, reliability, fidelity and migration considerations.
- Ingestion: describe sources, sinks, processing and orchestration. Review batch and streaming objectives, including late data and windows, using current technical docs.
- Storage: compare listed options against actual access patterns and operational requirements, rather than attaching one service name to every use case.
- Analysis: practise validation and aggregation, then review the visualization, AI/ML preparation and data-sharing objectives.
- Operations: explain how to monitor, automate, manage capacity and investigate cost for a defined workload. Revisit gaps before booking.

What should you expect on exam day?
The standard Professional Data Engineer exam lasts two hours and has 40–50 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. Registration costs USD200, plus applicable tax. The exam is offered in English and Japanese.
Choose a testing center or Pearson OnVUE remote proctoring. Remote exams are closed book and normally permit no breaks. Check the current ID, workspace, system and appointment instructions; arrange any needed accommodation before scheduling.
Your initial pass/fail result is provisional. Google says to allow 7–10 days for official confirmation. It does not report a numerical score; unsuccessful standard-exam candidates receive section-level feedback to help guide further study.
Professional candidates may make up to four attempts within two years. After a first failure, wait at least 14 days; after a second, 60 days; after a third, 365 days. Attempts count across languages and delivery methods, and each registration is paid.

Which renewal route applies to you?
The certification is initially valid for two years. Eligible holders can use the standard exam, a shorter renewal exam, or designated Google Skills learning.
The shorter exam lasts one hour, has 20 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions, costs USD100 plus applicable tax, and is offered in English and Japanese. Prepare against its own outline rather than assuming the standard guide’s weights apply.
Designated learning must be completed during the final year before your inactive date, with matching CM Connect and Google Skills emails and authorized data sharing. Activities completed outside that window do not count. After a first attempt, Professional Data Engineer candidates cannot switch between the shorter and standard renewal exams; that stated rule concerns those two exam routes.
Google permits renewal within 30 days after the inactive date, subject to available options. More than 30 days later, recertification requires the standard exam at full list price. Check your profile for the dates and route available to you.
| Route | Window opens | Extension |
|---|---|---|
| Designated Google Skills learning | One year before inactive date | Adds one year to inactive date |
| Shorter or standard renewal exam | 60 days before inactive date | Adds two years to inactive date |
